Braves at Hitmen

The Hitmen finally lived up to their name, pounding out 15 hits, including 5 doubles and a home run and stretched their winning streak to two games as they downed the Braves 11 to 9 at Heritage on June 25.  The Braves almost kept pace with 12 hits including 5 doubles and a home run.  It was the Hitmen’s second win in a row and their third in league play.

Things did not look too good for the Hitmen as the Braves scored three runs in the first inning.  Sleigh led off with a double and advanced to third on Malcolm’s single.  Sleigh scored when catcher Jaeme Gloyn’s throw went over second base on Malcolm’s steal.  Samuel’s double scored Malcolm.  He advanced to third on Latulippe’s single and scored on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 3-0 with none out.  Unphased, starting pitcher, Alex Priest-Brown struck out Hogan.  Although Hobbins got a bloop single, Keating was retired on a called strike and Gilroy on a foul tip to end the Brave’s at bat.  Priest-Brown gave up a single to Malcolm in the second, and to Hogan in the third but both runners were stranded on base.  In the fourth, Gilroy reached first on an error, but was forced out on the next play.  Sleigh walked, Malcolm stuck out and Sleigh was forced out at second to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Braves pitcher Beaupre, retired the Hitmen in order in the first inning.  In the second, the first batter, Joel Tugwood walked.  Gloyn popped up to third.  Adam Oattes singled.  Tugwood and Oattes advanced on a pass ball.  Alexander Green grounded out 4-3, scoring Tugwood and moving Oattes to third.  Tim Nikita singled home Oattes and advanced to second on Matt Thompson’s single. Thompsom was forced out on Tim McGinnis’ grounder to the short stop to end the inning.

In the third, J.S. Labrasseur and Matt Crowder singled, and both scored on Tugwood’s double, to give the Hitmen the lead.  Gloyn flied out to centre.  Oattes singled advancing Tugwood who then scored on a wild pitch.  Green grounded out, Nikita walked, but Thompson was called out on strikes to end the inning stranding two runners.  In the fourth inninh, McGinnis flied out to left field, but Labrasseur doubled and scored on Matt Crowder’s double.  Tugwood singled.  Gloyn homered to score three runs, giving the Hitmen a 9-3 lead.  Gilroy replaced Beaupre on the mound. Oattes doubled, Green struck out and Nikita drew another walked.  Thmpson was again called out on strikes to end the inning.

In the fifth inning, Latullipe lead off with a double.  Hogan flied out to left field.  Hobbins walked.  Both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Keating lined to the short-stop for the second out, but Gilroy homered on the first pitch to score three runs to bring the score to 9-6.  Geoff Magnus was brought in to relieve Priest-Brown and he struck out Stockdale to end the inning.

In the Hitmen’s fifth, McGinnis struck out, Labrasseur singled.  Mangat struck out on a foul tip.  Tugwood drew a walk and then Gloyn doubled, to score Labrasseur and Tugwood, Oattes singled but was stranded as Green grounded out 1-3.

 In the sixth, Sleigh singled, and Malcolm doubled.  Samuel doubled to score two runs.  Latullipe struck out but the pitch was wild and reached first.  Hogan was called out on strikes.  Hobbins grounded out 6-3 but Samuel scored on the play.  Keating struck out to end the inning and the game, as it was 22:35 and there was no time to continue.
