The Hitmen’s modest two-game winning streak in NCBL Tier I play came to an end at Heritage on Wednesday June 27, as they were defeated by the Red Sox, 3-1. Red Sox starter J.P. Donaghue pitched a complete seven inning game, giving up four hits, all singles, two walks and striking out five batters. The only run scored was unearned.
The Hitmen’s starter Jaeme Gloyn also pitched a strong six innings, before departing for graduation festivities. He gave up two runs (both unearned), two hits, four walks, hit one batter and stuck out eight batters.
Gloyn walked the first batter he faced in the game, Colin Kargus,. He subsequently had him picked off but Kargus reached second safely when the ball got away from the second baseman in the run down. Roch Sequin walked. Eric Brisebois singled to load the bases. Donaghue grounded into a 6-4-3 double play but Kargus scored. Geoff Gordon was hit by a pitch , but was caught stealing to end the inning.
In the third, the first batter Kargus struck out, Seguin singled and advanced to second when Brisebois drew a walk. Donaghue popped to first for the second out. Gordon grounded to third but the ball when through Alexander Green’s legs, allowing Seguin to score the Red Sox’s second run. Yannick Gosselin struck out to end the inning.
The HItmen’s only run came in the fourth inning. Lead-off batter Alex Priest-Brown drew a base on balls. Geoff Magnus flied out. Tim McGinnis singled, advancing Priest-Brown to second, where he was subsequently caught off base and retired in a run down, but McGinnis advanced to second on the play. Green grounded to third but the throw to first by Colin Kargus bounced away, allowing Green to reach base safely and McGinnis scored on the play. Joel Tugwood grounded into a force out at second to end the inning.
In the seventh Tim McGinnis, in his first pitching appearance of the season, struck out the first batter Chris Schmidt. Max Baxter’s fly to left was dropped. He advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kargus popped up to second. Seguin doubled home Baxter, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but he was stranded there when Brisebois grounded out 4-3.
In the Hitmen’s seventh, Green grounded out 4-3 and Tugwood struck out.
St.-Toute singled but Justin Mangat grounded out to end the game.
