With the Canadians tournament starting the next day, and the last minute news that it would be a wooden bat tournament, the Brewers scrambled to get some wooden bats and played this game with them to get at least a games worth of practice with the wood.
As it turned out, it mattered little as Dave Rivers shut down the Cardinals, and the Brewers hit as well as ever. After a Jon Zywicki double to lead the game off, Jason Krottner hit a 2 RBI single to give the Brewers a quick lead off of Cards starter Dave Burke. The Brewers continued to hit in the second as Keith Blouin hit a 2 RBI double into the left field corner to give them a 4-0 lead. After 2 quick outs in the bottom of the third, the Brewers then scored 3 more times taking advantage of 3 Cardinal errors.
Tough luck starter Burke`s night finished in the 4th as the Brewers scored twice more to make the score 9-0 after 4 innings. Jon Paul came in end the inning and to close the game giving up only 3 base runners over his 3 innings pitched. Meanwhile, Dave Rivers flew easily through the first 5 innings giving up only 3 hits and 0 walks. In the 6th, the Cardinals finally mustered a threat by hitting 3 singles with nobody out, but Rivers got out of the jam without any damage.
The Cardinals finally got to Rivers in the 7th as they hit 5 singles to plate 3 runs, but it was not enough as the Brewers won 9-3.
