RULES FOR SCORING

Runs Batted In

Credit the batter with an RBI if a runner on third is forced home with the bases full because of a base on balls, hit by pitch, or catchers’ interference.  Do not credit an RBI if a run scores when a batter hits into a double play.  Do not credit an RBI if a runner scores on an error; unless there is a runner on third base with less than two outs and the runner would have normally scored had the play been errorless.

Hits

Credit the batter with a base hit when a batter reaches base safely on a fair ball hit with such force, or so slowly, that the fielder has no opportunity to make the play.  Also, credit a base hit if the batter reaches base because the ball takes an bad hop causing the fielder to be unable to handle it (including hitting the mound or any bases), or if the ball hits an umpire or base runner.  Do not credit the batter with a hit when another runner is forced out, or would have been forced out if not for a fielding error; or when any infielder puts out, or would have put out the if not for a fielding error, a preceding runner who is attempting to advance one base or return to his original base.

Credit the batter with a double, triple, or homerun if the batter stops at the respective base without help of throwing or fielding errors.  Do not credit the batter with a triple when a preceding runner is put out at the plate, or would have been out if not for an error. Do not credit the batter with a double when a preceding runner is put out trying to advance from first to third or second to home, or would have been out if not for an error.

Stolen Bases

Credit the runner a stolen base if the pitch is wild or there is a passed ball caused by the pitcher or catcher’s reaction to the runner attempting to steal.  Credit a stolen base if a runner is picked off, gets into a rundown and advances to the next base without the aid of an error.  If the runner is thrown out after being picked off and attempting to advance to the next base, they are credited as caught stealing.  Do not credit any runners with a stolen base when a double or triple steal is attempted and one runner is thrown out attempting to steal.

 Sacrifice

Credit the batter with a sacrifice fly only when a runner scores from third on the play.  Credit the batter with a sacrifice fly if a runner scores from third on a fly ball that was dropped only if the runner would have been able to score if the ball had been caught.
Credit the batter with a sacrifice bunt, and not a hit, when a fielder, without error, unsuccessfully attempts to put out a proceeding runner.  Do not credit a sacrifice bunt if a proceeding runner is put out or would have been put out if not for an error.

Errors

It is not necessary that the fielder touch the ball to be charged with an error. If a ground ball goes through a fielder's legs or a pop fly falls untouched and in the scorer's judgment the fielder should have caught the ball, an error will be charged.  A mental mistake does not count as an error.  An error is charged against any fielder who drops a fly ball in foul territory.  No error shall be charged if a wild throw is made by the catcher attempting to prevent a stolen base.  No error shall be charged against any fielder who makes a wild throw if in the scorer's judgment the runner would have been safe anyways with a good throw (unless the throw permits any runner to advance to a base he would have reached had the throw not been wild).  No error shall be charged against any fielder who purposely lets a foul fly to fall safe with a runner on third.

Earned Runs

If a runner scores on a passed ball, the run is unearned; if the runner scores on a wild pitch, the run is earned.  No earned run is scored if the runner who scores reached first base by an error, or reached first safely without error after having his at bat prolonged by an error on a dropped foul ball.  No earned run is scored if the runner who scored should have been put out on base if not for an error.  If a runner advances bases due to an error and eventually scores, and the scorer feels that the runner would not have scored if not for the error, the run is unearned.  These rules apply to inherited runners as well.

Saves

A pitcher will be credited with a save if he finishes pitching for at least one inning, is not the winning pitcher, and either; enters the game with a lead of, at most, three runs or enters the game with the tying run on base, at bat or on deck.
