Sundevils at Winchester Sox

Winchester

In game 1 of this tier 2 semi-final, the middle of the Winchester order guaranteed that there will be at least one more game on their home field.

Winchester’s third, fourth and fifth hitters combined to go eight for 12 with six rbi’s and five runs scored in the Sox’s 9-2 victory over the Sundevils.

Winchester scored early with lead off hitter Kent Young leading off the bottom of the first with a double off of eventual loser Shawn Scolli. Number three hitter Mike Duperron cashed him in with a hard single, and he scored on a single by Scott Adams and a Sundevils fielding error.  After Adams was caught stealing by Sundevils catcher Curt Hambly, his first of three runners thrown out, Sox catcher Nik Paas took advantage of the 275 foot fence in right field for a solo shot. The Sox held a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning.

After cruising through the first inning, Duperron ran into some trouble in the second. After Blake Claydon grounded out to start the inning, Hambly walked and got to second on a wild pitch. Sundevils DH Mike Glustien then fouled off three pitches at 0and 2 1and 2 and 3 and 2, before ripping a single up the middle to score Hambly from second. Colin Kargus followed with a single of his own, then Dave Luchuk ripped a double in the gap to score Glustien. Duperron then got out of it by getting Pat Foran to strike out, and Scolli to line out to centre.  3-2 after 2 innings.

That was it for the Sundevils, as the Sox continued to produce runs with timely hitting and Mike Duperron was rock solid on the hill. The Sundevils got only 3 hits after the second inning, and Winchester kept on coming.

Final score Winchester 9, Sundevils 2.
